Introduction: The series of historical mysteries, set in France and England, begins in 1785, before the French Revolution. Anne Cartier, a vaudeville actress, has become a tutor of deaf children, and gets involved with murderous company. In pursuing truth and justice, she is joined by Colonel Paul de Saint-Martin of the French Royal Highway Patrol and his adjutant Georges Charpentier. Michou, a young deaf woman, plays a vital role. Occasionally they meet historical persons such as Baron Breteuil, Abbé Charles-Michel de l'Épée, the American ambassador Thomas Jefferson, the Swedish count Axel von Fersen and others.
